Gynaecological

Ultrasound Scanning
Gynaecological

Gynaecological (Pelvis)
This ultrasound examination is conducted to exclude obvious abnormalities within your pelvis including abnormalities of:
• The uterus (womb)
• The myometrium (the muscular body of the uterus)
• The endometrium (the lining of the uterine cavity)
• The ovaries
• The adnexa (the areas around each ovary).

This scan is also used for the investigation of infertility, ovarian screening and diagnosis of early pregnancy complications.

An ultrasound examination is a painless medical examination which uses soundwaves to “see” inside the body. No radiation is used in ultrasound. A transducer (which is like a small microphone) is placed over the area of the body being examined. Soundwaves pass through the skin from the transducer and echoes are reflected back to it. Those echoes are converted into electrical signals which can then be viewed as images on a television screen.

Detailed anatomy scan (19 – 24 weeks)

This is not a detailed scan as the baby is too big at this stage to exclude major
abnormalities. However, this scan gives ongoing information about the growth
and development of your baby. Various measurements are made to assess the
growth.

The amniotic fluid is checked as well as the position of the placenta
(afterbirth).

As well as measuring you baby, it is also possible to assess the
wellbeing of your baby by watching its movement on scan.

If you would like to know the sex of the baby, this can be done at this stage, however it is
still only 95% accurate!

Early pregnancy scan (7 – 11 weeks)

Ultrasound Scanning Obstetrics (pregnancy) Early pregnancy scan (7 – 11 weeks)This scan is particularly useful for women who have had previous miscarriages or early pregnancy problems and would like reassurance. It allows an assessment to be made of the number of babies you are carrying, your due date and the general wellbeing of your baby.

What is screening?

Screening is looking for cancer or other conditions before a person has any symptoms . This can help find these conditions at an early stage . When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread.

Have you got a family history of a disease or condition that you are worried about?
Are you anxious about having a certain disease or condition but has no symptoms?
We offer a full range of ultrasound screening including:
