Ultrasound Scanning Obstetrics (pregnancy) 3D/4D scan

What is a 3D/4D ultrasound scan?
3D scanning is an amazing three dimensional picture of your baby producing life-like picture. 4D just means that these life like pictures can be seen to move in real time so the activity of the baby inside your womb can be seen. Your baby can be seen moving, yawning, sucking its thumb and even smiling.
Are there any risks to my baby?
Despite extensive studies over the past 30 years, ultrasound has not been shown to cause any harm to mother or baby. In 3D/4D scanning, exactly the same type of intensity of ultrasound is used as with conventional scanning.
At what stage of the pregnancy should I visit?
This is dependent on the type of scan required. For 3D/4D scanning we recommend between 22 and 32 weeks when we can generally capture optimal facial images. We can however perform these scan outside of these times.
What factors determine the quality of the images?
The most important factor is the position of the baby. When the baby is persistently looking face down, then it is more difficult to obtain a good image. Other critical factors are the amount of amniotic fluid (the more the better) and the amount of tissue between the probe and the baby. Usually you will get a good image of the baby, but not always.
How much time should I plan for my visit?
You should allow 1 hour for your appointment. First a detailed or growth scan is performed in 2D, which is approximately 30 min. If you choose to proceed to have a 3D/4D scan, allow a further 30 min.
How much does it cost and what is included?
